About this facility

A transfer station is a staging point in the solid-waste system. Collection trucks, roll-off haulers and in many places residents with a pickup load drop waste on a tipping floor, where it is consolidated into larger transfer trailers or rail containers and moved to a landfill, waste-to-energy plant or recycling facility. Haulers use transfer stations to keep route trucks working locally instead of driving to a distant disposal site. Some transfer stations are open to the public, while many municipal sites are restricted to residents with a permit or sticker. Larger sites weigh loads and charge by the ton; smaller ones charge per bag or per item. Hours, fees and accepted materials vary — call ahead, especially for bulky items, construction debris, tires, appliances or anything that may be restricted.

Typically accepted at Recycling Center facilities

• Cardboard and mixed paper
• Plastic bottles and containers
• Aluminum and steel cans
• Glass bottles and jars
• Scrap metal
• Electronics (at some sites)

Hours, fees and accepted materials vary by site — call ahead before hauling a load.
